CHAPTER 8

Grey stood there, as shocked as he had been the first day he arrived. Finn looked around in a daze, probably trying to figure out what just happened. Grey remembered that feeling all too well. Except he hadn’t arrived alone like Finn.

Though Finn wasn’t technically by himself—what with Grey being there.

Would Kiri be okay recruiting Finn to their squad? Grey had to. Finn already knew the game. He was good at it. They were best friends.

Maybe he and Kiri wouldn’t be doomed after all.

The Admin popped up in front of Finn, and he jumped in surprise. “Dude! What the crap?”

“Greetings, new player!” the Admin said with a smile, already having moved on completely from Robert’s death like it was nothing. She had to be a computer program, Grey decided right then—no human could do that. He was still reeling, and he hardly knew the guy. “Welcome to the competition of a lifetime! You have been randomly selected for this special, virtual reality edition of Fortnite Battle Royale. I am the Admin and will be facilitating your tutorial . . .”

The Admin went on just like she had when Grey first arrived. It was strange to watch, being on the other side of the audience. Finn hadn’t caught sight of Grey yet, and Grey wasn’t sure if he should wave or wait until the Admin had finished her speech.

But just as the Admin started in on the rules, Finn’s vision drifted to the people behind him. His eyes found Grey within seconds, and recognition hit. Finn lifted his finger and pointed. “Grey! You’re here?”

Now everyone’s eyes were on Grey, even the Admin’s. Grey nodded. “Hey, Finn. Sorry you’re stuck here, but good to see you.”

“Everyone was so freaked out the day you collapsed!” Finn said. “So that just happened to me, too?”

“Yeah.” Grey gulped, never imagining he’d get to hear about what happened after he got stuck in Battle Royale. “Is my family . . . all right?”

Finn cringed. “They’re pretty stressed. No one knows what’s wrong with you. But you’re here. Crazy.”

“Excuse me,” the Admin cut in. “Grey, will you please divulge how you are acquainted with the new player?”

“He’s my friend,” Grey said. “We go to school together.”

“I need to speak with my superiors about this development. We have never had two players know each other in the real world before,” the Admin said and then disappeared.

The room erupted in discussion the moment she was gone. People weren’t just talking about Robert dying, but the idea that Grey and Finn knew each other. Was that fair? Would that be a security risk to whomever was running this hacked version of Fortnite Battle Royale? Grey didn’t care about any of that right now. He ran over to Finn. He would have hugged him, but he figured that would look suspicious.

“Are you okay?” Grey asked.

Finn looked around, smiling a little. “I mean, this is like Fortnite, but for real, yeah?”

“Pretty much,” Grey said. “A few things might be different. I don’t know.
